Experience Banthi Bhojanam at Desi Street Bytes on October 25, 2026

Join us in Chandler for a traditional Andhra vegetarian feast featuring 20+ delicacies, served from 11:30 AM to 3:00 PM.

Picture a long banana leaf and a row of people sitting side by side while servers walk the line with hot rice, dal and a spoonful of ghee. That's Banthi Bhojanam, the traditional South Indian vegetarian feast, and on Sunday, October 25, 2026, we're serving it at Desi Street Bytes in Chandler from 11:30 AM to 3:00 PM.

20+ dishes, a warm crowd, and a limited number of seats. Here's a look at what's on the leaf and how to save your spot.

What is Banthi Bhojanam?

Banthi Bhojanam is a traditional Andhra feast and a much-loved part of the wider Telugu food culture, rooted in village celebrations and temple meals. In Telugu, banthi means a row of people seated together and bhojanam means a meal, so the name says it all: one big meal, shared in a row. Traditionally it's served on banana leaves, and hot rice on a fresh leaf has an aroma all its own. For the full background, visit our Banthi Bhojanam page.

Think of it as the festive version of a South Indian thali. Instead of a single plate, the whole spread comes to your leaf, and everyone around you is eating the same feast.

What's on the leaf

There are 20+ items in the spread, and each one has its place. Here's how it comes together.

Rice and Puri: Bagara rice, which is cooked with whole spices, sits next to plain sona masoori rice, the soft everyday rice that carries every spoonful of dal and ghee. Puri comes with aloo kurma, a mild potato curry that's easy to love at any age.

Curries and Fries: Guthi vankaya masala is small brinjals in a rich, spiced gravy. Dondakaya pakoda fry brings ivy gourd (also called tindora) with a crisp bite. A seasonal dal sits alongside, with butter chilli on the side.

The Andhra Heart of the Meal: Pappu charu is a thin, tangy lentil soup you pour over rice. Kandi podi and peanut powder are dry spice mixes you stir into rice with ghee. Roti pachadi is a coarse, rustic chutney, and the Andhra mango pickle gives every bite a sharp, salty kick.

Crunch and Cool-Down: Papad and fryums for texture, and pot curd to calm the spice.

Sweets and Drinks: Boondi laddoo and pineapple kesari to finish, badam milk, and bottled water.

A quick note for vegan guests: this is a vegetarian feast, and it includes dairy such as ghee and pot curd. If you eat vegan, mention it when you reserve and ask which items fit.
